There will be long holidays in the UAE as the Ministry Of Human Resources and Emiratisation on Thursday announced the paid private sector holiday for the Hijri New Year.

The holiday will be on Sunday, August 23, giving private-sector employees a long three-day weekend.

“On the occasion of Hijri New Year 1442, #MOHRE announces that Sunday, 23rd of August, will be a paid leave for all employees working in private sector establishments and facilities across the UAE,” the ministry tweeted.

Earlier today, Federal Authority For Government Human Resources announced a holiday for the public sector.

The Islamic calendar depends on the movement of the moon. The beginning of each month is marked by the observance of a new moon seen for the first time. Visibility of the new moon depends on various factors, such as the weather.
